About Dish Network

A little on the history of Dish Network

Dish Network is a satellite provider that competes with Directv® as well as Verizon, AT&T, and other cable companies to provide home television service and premium channels.  The technology is a "direct broadcast satellite" (DBS).  Dish Network is also a services oriented organization that provides satellite-based television to homes and businesses all across the United States.

Dish Network is operated by it's EchoStar Communications Corporation, it's parent company. They are headquarted in the city of Meridian, Colorado.  Within the "direct broadcast satellite" area, according to customer satisfaction surveys, Dish Network is the #1 rated satellite TV service in the US.

Dish Network's Competitors

Dish Network, and it's cheif competitor, Directv®, were started in 1996. Both  companies compete with cable television providers, and more recently, newer technologie, like Verizon's FIOS and AT&T's Uverse.

Company Philosphy

Dish Network's real claim to fame, is that they were the pioneers of "low cost programming", launching their service with initial pricing that was 20% lower than their cheift competitor,DirecTV. While DirecTV focused on selling it's service as a "premium", high-end product, primarly for those that could not get cable television,  Dish Network actually went after existing cable customers, and competed head-to-head with those providers, even in their strongholds...large cities like New York and Los Anglels. Despite not initially  being able to offer local channels, they enjoyed great success, largely because they offered more channels, better picture quality and a lower overall cost than cable TV. Their approach clearly worked well, and they officially reached 100,000 subscribers by the middle of 1996, a growth path that beat DirectTV handily.
